The Oxford Internet Institute is a multidisciplinary research and teaching department of the University of Oxford, dedicated to the social science of the Internet. Or put more simply, to 'understanding life online'.
Since our founding in 2001, the Internet has exploded. Digital connections are now embedded in almost every aspect of our daily lives, so research on individual and collective behaviour online is crucial to understanding our social, economic and political world. As researchers we have unprecedented access to a huge volume of rich social data, and are developing new theories, concepts and methods to analyse it. We are able to provide the empirical data and conceptual analysis that is so needed to design policy solutions to societal problems. Our Masters and doctoral programmes bring students from all over the world, to work with our faculty at the cutting-edge of their fields. Together, we aim to positively shape the development of our digital world for the public good.

The Role and Impact of Parental control Technologies in Parent-Teen Relationships
"The Role and Impact of Parental control Technologies in Parent-Teen Relationships" with Prof Ekaterina Hertog, Prof Victoria Nash and Prof Netta Weinstein.
This study explores how parental control technologies affect family relationships from the perspective of adolescents aged 16-17 in the UK. Through seven focus groups with participants from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, we examine how young people experience and negotiate the use of monitoring technologies within their families. Drawing on theories of connective labor and technological affordances, we identify three main themes: family practices in utilizing parental controls, adolescents' experiences of monitoring technologies, and young people's reactions ranging from collaboration to subversion. Our findings suggest that the effectiveness and acceptability of these technologies largely depend on whether they are implemented through open communication and support adolescents' growing need for autonomy. Location tracking apps were generally more accepted than digital monitoring tools, particularly when used reciprocally within families. Notably, while private school students reported the highest levels of parental control use, they were also more likely to describe using these technologies for self-regulation. Young people across all backgrounds emphasized the importance of trust and communication over technological solutions. These findings have important implications for the design of parental control technologies and family-centered approaches to online safety that balance protection with adolescent autonomy.

Harnessing Partisan Motives to Combat Misinformation
Переглядів 4421 годину тому
Cameron Martel presents "Harnessing Partisan Motives to Combat Misinformation" Partisan motives are often conceptualized as fundamentally in opposition to accuracy-directed motives. Rather than being opposed, however, it may be that partisan and accuracy motivations simply operate independently - in which case political motives may not necessarily interfere with truth discernment. Here, we test...

Very good lecture on internet archtecture. I find it funny that he uses as example travelling 100 gb across the country in 3 days, which would be equivalent to 3 mbps, something that was reasonably fast back in 2015. Nowadays, we have connections of 100 mbps and more. It shows how rapidly changes occur and how evolution is faster than ever. Anyway, congrats to professor Joss. Thanks
Thanks for the archives

would you be able to give a high-level and intelligent presentation in a non-native language in a small room of people?
Very well stated, ppl say whatever due to the speed of response which it is emotional usually.

Google already has this technology. It's called "Google trends."
You miss the entire point. It’s not about identifying what is trendy, it’s about wrapping your arms around social media as a universe for research. It presents new challenges
This presentation by an excellent speaker was ruined by the crass production of the video which managed to leave out all the visual slides.
